A spokeswoman for Hyde County says a man who was swimming with his wife has drowned along Ocracoke Island.
County spokesman Jamie Carter says emergency officials got the call about 5 p.m. Friday. She says the man drowned on the north end of the island, which is part of North Carolina's Outer Banks. She says the victim's wife got to shore safely.
Carter says a rip current alert was issued for Thursday but not for Friday. However, she says emergency responders reported the water was rough when they arrived.
Several emergency providers responded, including EMS, the sheriff's office, the National Park Service and the Ocracoke Volunteer Fire Department.
No other details were immediately available.
