A registered sex offender has resigned as an alternate delegate to the Republican National Convention from North Carolina.
The News & Observer of Raleigh reported that the resignation of 41-year-old Harvey L. West Jr. of Plymouth came about an hour after the newspaper reported his status Thursday.
West had been nominated by Republicans in the 3rd Congressional District as an alternate to the convention in Tampa, Fla.
West sent an email to North Carolina Republican Party Chairman Robin Hayes saying he was honored and surprised at being chosen as an alternate. West said he was resigning because of attempts by political opponents to use him as a weapon.
West pleaded guilty in 2000 to taking indecent liberties with children in Beaufort County and was required to register as a sex offender.
Records show West spent seven years in prison and was released in 2006.
