North Carolina's insurance commissioner wants Congress to examine flood insurance problems in the wake of Hurricane Irene.
Commissioner Wayne Goodwin says his office handled 272 written complaints and more than 700 phone calls related to the storm that happened six months ago. He said through those written complaints, more than $400,000 was recovered to policyholders.
Goodwin says the majority of those complaints were for disputed settlement offers, delays in settlement payments and denials of claims. "Given the overall complaints and complications North Carolina suffered as a result of the National Flood Insurance Program, I encourage Congress to examine that program's response to Irene," said Goodwin.
Goodwin also is encouraging the state's congressional delegation to support extending the National Flood Insurance Program by at least five years.
