Trooper Kills Man With Gun During Traffic Stop

Authorities say a North Carolina state trooper shot and killed a suspect who pointed a loaded gun at the officer during a traffic stop.

Investigators said the trooper pulled over 64-year-old James Moore around 10:30 p.m. Friday on U.S. Highway158 west of Roanoke Rapids because he thought he was driving drunk.

Authorities say the trooper smelled alcohol and ordered Moore out of the car. He then found a gun in the suspect's pocket and ordered him to the ground.

But investigators say Moore pulled the loaded gun from his pocket and pointed it at the trooper. The officer fired back, killing Moore.

The Highway Patrol says the trooper has been put on administrative leave as the shooting is investigated.
