Lenoir County Added To Extreme Drought List

You can add another county into the extreme drought for Eastern Carolina, while three others are now off that list. This as state experts will meet next week in Martin County to discuss the drought impacts.

Lenoir County is now included in that category, thanks to the latest drought map that came out Thursday. That same map put Dare, Hyde and Tyrrell counties back under a severe drought.

An extreme drought is the second worst of five conditions listed on the drought map.

In addition to Lenoir County, Carteret, Craven, Duplin, Jones, and Onslow counties are included in the extreme drought.

Much of the remainder of Eastern Carolina remains under severe drought conditions, though recent rains have placed Halifax and Northampton counties in the abnormally dry status.

Meanwhile, the North Carolina Drought Management Advisory Council will meet next week in Martin County to discuss serious impacts the drought is having on farms and how the state can prepare should conditions worsen.

The July 21st meeting begins at 10:00 a.m. at the Senator Bob Martin Eastern Agriculture Center.
