Evacuating Family Involved In Fatal Wreck

The Nash County Sheriff's Office says a family of five from Manteo was involved in a fatal car accident as they were evacuating from Hurricane Irene.

The family was traveling west on U.S. 64 on the way to a friend's house around 11:21 p.m. Their vehicle struck a wooden pallet in the middle of the road causing the driver to lose control. After over-correcting, the vehicle flipped several times.

The driver, Bertha Gonzalez, 35, was killed on the scene. Her husband and three children, ages 3, 13 and 15, were taken to Wake Med Hospital in Raleigh.

The 13-year-old girl was riding in the rear, middle seat. She was ejected and airlifted to the hospital.

All passengers were wearing seat belts, and officials say alcohol was not a factor in the crash.
