Elizabeth City Wind Farm On Hold

The largest wind farm ever proposed in North Carolina is on hold because utilities have decided the project's power is too costly.

Iberdrola Renewables says construction won't begin because there are no agreements to buy electricity from its Desert Wind Energy project near Elizabeth City. The company no longer expects to meet its earlier completion target next year.

State regulators in May approved the project that's been two years in planning.

Iberdrola signed real-estate agreements with about 40 property owners in North Carolina's northeastern Pasquotank and Perquimans counties for the rights to build 150 wind turbines as tall as 50 stories.

Company spokesman Paul Copleman says the wind project could start if electric companies agree to buy the power.

It has always been amazing to me how much everybody knows about everything. Was in the Air Force for over twenty years and was in some great positions which required knowledge, skills and expertise in many areas of responsibility. I just hope/wish people knew half as much as the think they know - some are articulate, informed and truthful. Others act like a ratilesnake after a rat. May be set our aims at one thing -- the benefit of our nation and its posterity? Throwing comments at each other only serve our government and make us act stupidly. May we do that please? We all have disagreements but can we disagree and agree on certain items> for the sake of our country? Please reply. Thanks.

I said months ago it would not happen due to greed. I have since heard about several more that are idle because the taxpayers money ran out and got shut down.

Well green guy, buy one on your dime and put it to work. The only clean green form of energy we have was nuclear but you liberds were scared of something you didn't understand, so you killed it. Yet none of you are yet to turn the power off you home and park you car. Either live it or don't opine. There simply no excuse for not using the internet and learning about the pros and cons of anything. You just figure is green and wind is cheap....wind and solar will not give everybody in America the power to take the grid off of oil and coal. You have been played a sucker by the left just like Obama is a sucker for slick talking solar and wind companies. Now, go learn about Solyndra...report back...that is what you have to show for "green". Over half a billion green is gone now...

Cutting into big oil profits: Are you kidding. You think paying hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars (our money- assuming you have a job) to produce energy that is almost twice the cost of what we now pay is good? So if the "1%" is responssible for this, then they did you a favor. But what is really responsible for this is common sense. Power companies are not going to agree to pay such astronomical prices for energy. Thank God. By the way, whenever this happens (if it does) you will be at the front of the line to cry and whine about your doubled power bill claiming that evil capitalists are causing all your problems.

We, the 99%, saw the pricetag of the current from these and decided on affordable energy. Boy that chinese GE company wants a lot of money for these...

What an ignorant comment!!!!! You have got to be kidding me, have you done ANY research on the issue? The cost of this "energy" is phoenominal to the consumer as well as the tax payer, not to mention the noise that these things put out. What about the birds and bats that will be killed by the propellers that the democrats are (or maybe were flip/flop) so worried about? Do you remember earlier in the year when an entire wind farm was shut down for months (by your fellow democrats) because they found a dead bat or two. Do you want to see your utility bills skyrocket even more or do you just not care because you don't live in the affected area? I am one of your "so called" 99% and I don't want this and I would bet a years GUC bills that there are a whole lot more who don't want it either. STOP including me in your ignorant 99% comments and do some research, you are really looking ignorant here!!

The costs, operating, start up, shut down of a wind farm is phenominal. For one time in your life, do no bite off more than you can chew. Studied this for three full weeks and found that the weather has to be almost pefect all the time before it can be profitable. The prevailing winds, simply put, are not prevelant in this area ---period. This is not professional advice, suggest you make your own study.
