ECSU Announces Second Round Of Layoffs

More layoffs are coming to Elizabeth City State University.

Chancellor Charles Becton announced because of a $4 million budget shortfall for the upcoming fiscal year, 34 employees will lose their jobs.

Last fall the university announced 46 employees were cut because of a shortfall for the current fiscal year.

Becton said when he took over at ESCU last July, the financial outlook was precarious. He cited declining enrollment, mandated state cuts by the General Assembly, and initial budget projections for fiscal year 2014-2015 showed a shortfall of $4.4 million.

ECSU said it was now time to implement additional "rightsizing" measures for the university. Becton said they will focus on rebuilding and stabilizing enrollment.

"We are making difficult, but necessary, decisions that will bring us more in line with our peers. This will result in a balanced budget-an absolute necessity-and provide some of the resources required to strengthen critical campus operations such as Campus Police, Clery Act compliance, and Enrollment Management," Becton said.

"If we are able to rebuild and maintain our enrollment levels, the budget actions we are taking now should be sufficient. We are poised for improvement if we are able to retain current students to graduation and to attract more new students to campus."
