The Highway Patrol has released the name of the man killed in a freak accident Tuesday night.
Troopers say 21-year-old Anthony Walker, Jr. of Gatesville was killed. The Highway Patrol says the entire tree came down across Middle Swamp Rd. just as Walker was driving by. They believe he was killed on impact.
Sgt. Rodney Sawyer says the 18-inch diameter pine tree slammed into his windshield and onto the roof of Walker's vehicle.
High winds during the storm that was rolling through the area knocked the tree down, and it made impact on the driver's side of the 2003 Pontiac sedan.
The call came into dispatchers around 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, just as a severe storm was rolling through northeastern North Carolina. The tree crushed a car with a man inside on Middle Swamp Rd. near Highway 158 in Gates County.
The name of the driver has not been released at this time.
