A big bottleneck on the way to the beach may soon be four-laned.
The D.O.T. is proposing widening Highway 64, from Columbia to Highway 264 near Manns Harbor. It is the last section of Highway 64 that is a 2-lane highway to the Outer Banks.
In addition to the new 27 mile four-lane highway, they would also replace the bridge over the Alligator River. The entire project is estimated to cost between $356 million and $399 million.
The D.O.T. will hold two upcoming public meetings on the proposals. The first will be Monday, April 23rd and open house from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., and a formal Presentation at 7 p.m. in the Columbia High School Auditorium. The on April 24th it will be at the East Lake Community Building, at the same times.
