Corolla Beach Closed Due To Hurricane Debris

COROLLA, N.C (AP) -- A North Carolina beach is closed to swimmers because debris from Hurricane Irene has created a hazard. Corolla beach was closed Wednesday.

Currituck County Emergency Management spokesman Randall Edwards said Thursday that officials are waiting for the high tide to recede to determine whether the water at Corolla was safe.

Edwards says Corolla's beach was closed after lifeguards saw trash, wood planks and tree branches floating in the water and worried they could hit a swimmer. He says it's to be expected that debris swept to sea by a big storm will wash back to shore again.

Dare County officials have said most of their beaches are open.
