Coast Guard Medevacs Boater From Oregon Inlet

The Coast Guard had to medevac a boater 45 miles east of Oregon Inlet Thursday after he displayed symptoms of a stroke.

An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City airlifted the 25-year-old male from a recreational boat after watchstanders at Coast Guard Station Oregon Inlet received the report. The message was relayed by the crew of another pleasure boat, the Assault Weapon, via VHF-FM radio channel 16.

Lt. Kevin Sullivan of Coast Guard Sector North Carolina said, "Thanks to the good Samaritan aboard the Assault Weapon acting as a radio relay and passing critical information over VHF-FM 16, we managed to locate the man in distress and transport him to the proper medical facility. This a good reminder of the importance of monitoring VHF-FM 16; you never know when you can help a fellow boater."

I was the patient that had to be medivaced of the of pleasure boat, The Little Shooter. The doctors told me that I suffered a mini-stroke also known as a TIA, and within 24 hours all my symptoms had disappeared. I am so very thankful for everyone that participated in my rescue and got me to the medical care that I needed. I contacted the captian of A Salt Weapon, which was the boat that served as the rely between us and the Coast Guard. I meet him and thanked him personally. I have also contacted the Coast Guard to thank the crew that was involved. I am very thankful for everyone that was involved and that I was able to make a full recovery.

Spent many hours offshore, thank you Coast Guard, and thank you to the relay boat that was smart enough to be on channel 16. You both are hero's.
