Coast Guard Rescues 3 Boaters & Dog From Alligator River

The Coast Guard rescued three people and a dog Wednesday after their 23-foot boat ran aground in the shallow waters at the mouth of the Alligator River near Elizabeth City.

Tyrell County Sheriff's Office personnel contacted Coast Guard Station Elizabeth City watchstanders at approximately 3:30 p.m., stating they had received a 911 call from boaters who were in distress.

A Station Elizabeth City crew launched a 25-foot Response Boat - Small to assist, but were unable to approach the boaters due to the shallow waters.

Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City launched a crew aboard an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter to airlift the boaters to safety.

The helicopter crew airlifted the boaters and the dog at approximately 5:30 p.m. and took them to the Northeastern Regional Airport in Edenton, N.C. where they were met by family.

There are no reports of injuries.
