A chief deputy sheriff is off the job after his arrest Sunday for assaulting an inmate.
Hertford County Chief Deputy Timothy Lassiter has been charged with assault inflicting serious injury and simple assault.
Sheriff Juan Vaughan says back on June 12th there was an altercation in the courtroom involving inmate Troy Powell and Chief Lassiter and Deputy Charles Reynolds. Powell alleges that Lassiter assaulted him. The chief was charged on Sunday and he has been suspended with pay from the Sheriff's Office.
Powell, who was already jailed on charges of injury to personal property, driving while license revoked and two counts of resisting a public officer, now faces additional charges of communicating threats, malicious conduct by prisoner, resisting public officer, assault on government official, disorderly conduct, resisting public officer and assault physical injury to law enforement officer.
Lassiter has a July 24th court date.
