Deputy Injured, Charged In Head-On Crash With 18-Wheeler

The Highway Patrol says a Tyrrell County deputy is charged with failure to yield after he crashed his car into an 18-wheeler head-on while making a u-turn Monday afternoon.

Trooper Tim Crumpler says about 4:25 p.m. Monday Deputy Brent Doughtie was making a u-turn in an attempt to make a traffic stop on U.S. 64 near Old U.S. 64 east of Columbia and ran head-on into the semi truck carrying furniture. Doughtie was taken to Outer Banks Medical Center with cuts to his head and face. The diver of the truck was not hurt.

Doughtie is the son of Dare County Sheriff Doug Doughtie and has been with Tyrrell County since last July.

The Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.
