More than 65 dogs and cats have been rescued from what authorities say was a puppy mill in Perquimans County.
Several agencies, including the Humane Society of the U.S., assisted in the rescue on Chapanoke Road in Hertford that began around 7:30 a.m.
Animals on the property included dogs, cats, ducks, geese and rabbits.
All of the dogs and cats are headed to the Norfolk SPCA for assessment. Authorities say many of the animals have serious medical problems, including severe dental disease, tumors, hernias, as well as eye and ear infections.
There is no immediate word whether any charges will be filed in the case.
