An insurance agent here in Eastern Carolina is under arrest, accused of 13 counts of embezzlement.
The State Department of Insurance says Joseph Alligood of Elizabeth City was an independent agent, owning his own insurance agency in Edenton from 2007 to 2008.
The state says the 32-year-old Alligood is accused of embezzling at least $9,564.
Authorities say Alligood would submit insurance premium paperwork for new customers, but then something would always be missing and the insurance company would return the paperwork. Alligood is accused of then pocketing the refund.
Alligood's insurance agency is now closed.
