Man Charged With Shooting Two In Hyde County

A shooting Saturday night in Engelhard has landed two people in the hospital and another in jail.

Hyde County deputies say they were called to 146 Cooper Lane around 10:45 p.m. There they found two victims, one a 10-year-old boy, shot with a 9mm pistol.

Mack Mann of Engelhard is now charged with attempted first degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with the intent to kill and assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury. The 47-year-old Mann is being held on a $500,000 bond.

Deputies say both victims were taken to Pitt County Memorial Hospital and they are expected to make a full recovery.

For the comment on Nov 4(?) that stated the first responders did not have the same training that EMS has, guess again. Most of the responding first responders (on this scene) have had the same training as the currently employed EMS that responded. The first responders waited until they were told the scene was secure, they did not say the gunman had not been apprehended they said the scene was secure for rescue personnel - anyone in "scanner land" would have heard the transmission between first responders and dispatch - as first responders (fire dept) and law enforcement can't communicate directly. Did EMS inquire as to whether the scene was secure or did they go in there unaware? As of late it seems that EMS is gettin to be a joke. Many of the "imports" that have been hired lately have never worked in a system where they have had a 30 min to Hour long transport to the hospital, they have been used to 5-10 mins.

For the comment posted on Oct. 22 @ 6:16 am. The child shot is not a Hyde County resident, he is living in Pitt County, therefore Hyde County is not responsible to complete an investigation unless request by Pitt County. And if you think DSS is corrupt, maybe you need to apply for a job there.

ref to accidental shooting of young man. Hope Kyle is ok,,,,everyone with or without a gun needs to be careful. Some are out just to harm people and might not be carrying a gun.

Oooops, I left out a key word earlier, I had meant to write I hope in the not too distant future we would NOT have to wait so long for rescue to arrive with good folks on board , that knows what to do, and enough experience and knowledge to help the patients.

Talking about securing the scene, a trained EMT would know not to go to a shooting scene without Law Enforcement. The first responders who went were probly the first on scene and went regardless of a secured scene, because they have not been properly trained. The first responders need to do better and not be in a hurry to get there on such a call, and not all the first responders in the county are certified first responders so they are doing more harm than good, its all about the money up to $50.00 a call for the Fire Depts.

Yvette & Teddy family, I'm sorry for your son injury and stress and pain of suffering. I sure hope the time will come again in the very near future, when we will have to wait for a long time for a good rescue squad in our community, to respond to things like this.. NOT having to sit and wait soo long for anyone to arrive. Only to call for back up. That seems to be the thing now days. You call 911 , we call Eastcare.

Used to: The night my son was shot. The EMS and the Fairfield Fire Dept. was on the ball. The EMS had Kyle ready to go when they landed and the FD had the field lit up for the landing. I just know for my son they did work as a team and did what was best for us all. My hats off to them.
