Couple Charged With Extorting Money From Elderly Woman

A married couple is due in a Northampton County court Monday on charges they extorted money from an elderly woman.

Mary and Charlie King reportedly took around $117,000 from the woman. Court records show Mary King is charged with larceny by employee and extortion. Charlie King is charged with conspiracy.

The Roanoke Chowan News Herald says Mary worked for an 83-year-old, as an assistant in her home, and started demanding the woman sign blank checks.

why is everyone trying to correct the grammar of one person (even though he/she did put it up)? seems no one is really interested in the story.

"A married couple is due" is absolutely correct. A "couple", while indicating two people, is a singular noun.

To ktowner: YOU are the one who should learn proper English. The word couple is a singular noun and therefore should be used with "is" and not "are".

ktowner.... when referring to the 'married couple' as a single entity, "is" is correct. If it had been '...a couple of people...,' then "are" would be correct. Keep checking, though... I tend to look out for grammatical errors (note: typos are excluded) in news articles on both websites and newsprint.
