Authorities: NJ Man Dead After Trying To Break Into Halifax Man's Home

Authorities say a New Jersey man has been killed after he forced his way into a North Carolina man's home.

Halifax County Sheriff Jeff Frazier told WRAL-TV that 61-year-old Carlton Burgess, of Lumberton, N.J., was shot in the chest Friday morning.

Investigators say Burgess knocked on Marcel Alston's door in Halifax, then forced his way inside and began beating the homeowner.

Authorities say Alston was shot in the buttocks as he ran up the stairs, but managed to get his own gun out of his bedroom and shoot Burgess.

Frazier says Alston told police he and Burgess have a long-running dispute, but he hadn't seen the other man in several years.

The sheriff says the killing appears to be self-defense, but prosecutors will decide if charges are filed.

From the information provided, there has never been a more clear case for self defense! No one wishes to kill another human being, but sometimes the criminal thugs force good people to do what they have to ,to maintain their safety! My guess is as the economy gets worse you will hear more and more of lawful citizens having to defend themselves and family (as long as the anti-gun people like Deborah Ross (D-Wake) and Ronnie Sutton (D-Roberson) don't continue to kill pro-gun bills in committee!!!! They don't want you to be able to defend yourself and family and we all know the police can't protect us all, as they can't be everywhere!!!).

This man was attacked in HIS home. Charges should not be filed and on top on that the other man shot him first. Come on. He did the right thing.
