Daily Reflector Sold To Privately Held Family Company

Cox Enterprises Inc. says it has agreed to sell more than a dozen North Carolina newspapers to a company headed by the son of late billionaire Jack Kent Cooke.

Cox said Monday that it will sell the Rocky Mount Telegram, The Daily Reflector of Greenville and The Daily Advance of Elizabeth City along with 10 weekly papers in eastern North Carolina. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

John Kent Cooke, who heads Cooke Communications LLC, said in a statement that the group believes in the tradition of family-owned independent newspapers. His son, John Kent Cooke Jr., will serve as president of Cooke Communications North Carolina and publisher of The Daily Reflector.

Georgia-based Cox Enterprises continues to market for sale its newspapers in Texas.

The Daily Reflector says it and two other daily newspapers here in Eastern Carolina are being sold to a privately held family-owned company.

Cooke Communications will buy the Greenville newspaper, along with the Rocky Mount Telegram and the Daily Advance in Elizabeth City from Cox Enterprises.

Cooke is headed by John Kent Cooke, former part owner of the Los Angles Daily News, the Washington Redskins and the Chrysler Building in New York City, The company publishes the Key West (Florida) Citizen, as well as other weekly papers on the Florida Keys.

The Reflector says Cooke's son will become president of Cooke Communications North Carolina and publisher of the Greenville newspaper.

Cox, based in Atlanta, has been shedding itself of smaller daily newspapers, but is keeping flagship papers in Atlanta, Dayton, Ohio and West Palm Beach, Florida.

    I hope the DR gets better! It's been going down the hill fast the past few years! The DR has a lot of work to do if they are gonna get any respect as a newspaper.

    I hope that the new owners fire everybody from the paper carriers to the editor. Service has been EXTREMLY POOR. The paper carrier comes when ever they get ready whether you get todays paper or the one from two days ago.

    If they want to make it here they better ditch the liberal image they now support; and I'm not saying go conservative either, although they would be better off going conservative here. Non-partisan.
