50+ Arrests Expected In Tri-City Drug Bust

Law enforcement officers say they have nearly 50 drug suspects in their sights following a 4-month undercover operation and started making arrests Tuesday.

WITN was with officers as they served a search warrant on Morris Bridgers' home on Wilson Street in Tarboro. Bridgers was one of five people arrested Tuesday. He's charged with selling and possession of crack cocaine.

Lieutenant Keith Hale with Tarboro Police says officers with his department, along with the Scotland Neck and Enfield Police Departments, and N.C. Alcohol Law Enforcement conducted undercover drug buys starting in June, and plan to arrest dozens more people in the three towns through January.

"A high percentage of the crimes that we deal with are all related in some form or fashion to somebody having a substance abuse problem or the sale drugs. So if you can kind of keep your drug issues in check, then it helps reduce the type of crimes that you're having," said Lt. Hale.

Hale says Peggy Poole, Lakel Black, and Terrence Cherry were also arrested Tuesday. One person, who's name is being withheld by authorities for now, is expected to cooperate with them on other drug investigations.

What purpose does alerting the potential suspects by issuing this information to the media before the arrests are completed? Psy-ops or something?

If I was a Drug Dealer I would stay off the streets and out of sight til the heat cooled down, maybe that is a good idea the PD has. Hope it lasts til Christmas!
