NC Lawmakers To Consider Fireworks Law Changes

The North Carolina Legislature soon will consider changing the law following a Fourth of July fireworks explosion on the Outer Banks that left four workers dead.

Senate leader Marc Basnight's office said late Thursday legislation will be unveiled next week designed to improve safety standards for the handling and transport of large amounts of fireworks.

The bill is still being drafted, but it would make clear who can handle the pyrotechnics and direct the state fire marshal to provide oversight.

Basnight's office said current law says "experts" are responsible for the fireworks but provides no details on what constitutes an expert.

Workers for a South Carolina company unloading fireworks from a truck died after a single blast at an Ocracoke Island marina. A fifth worker survived.

They need to put the fireworks where the sun doesn't shine and get the budget PASSED!

Why even bother with this subject in the NC Legislature at this time. You people in Raleigh get the DAMM BUDGET worked on that is costing us a fortune every day over! And yet you in Raleigh will say we need to make cuts. WHAT IS THIS COSTING OUR STATE RIGHT NOW?

OK, you have to be TOLD how to SAFELY move fireworks. I think this happens if you dont. What now, fireworks inspectors, more training. Come on. 5 people died carrying millions of pounds of explosives around this 4th. Sounds about right statisically.

The Chinese are credited with inventing fireworks and the vast majority of fireworks are manufactured in China, and have been for at least as far back as 1970.

This action is designed to get votes. It is outragous that 4 people died but when ploiticians sent solders to die in a war they want it is OK. Accountability.

More socialist control! The people who died knew they had accepted a job handling explosives and unfortunately the worse case scenario happened. I know the dangers associated with driving a car, flying in a plane, riding a bike on the road, etc however I do those things anyway...the government doesn't enact new laws everytime one of these tragedies occurs! I can't believe in the economic hard times our state is in this is what they are working on!!!

Problems probably be averted if not for Made in China. Do we really want to trust folks who poisoned children and pets? No I. I never saw anything wrong with Made in USA - wish I could see more of that. Our unemployment rate certainly would get better. Wise up people.
