FIRST ON WITN: Serial Killer Suspect Spent Time In Eastern Carolina

A man who authorities say killed five people in South Carolina last week was very familiar with prisons here in Eastern Carolina.

Patrick Burris was killed by Gaston County police Monday in a shootout.

Burris had been in North Carolina prisons on and off since 1990.

WITN News has learned the 41-year-old Burris had been in seven prisons here in the East since July 2000.

Here is a breakdown:

In July 2000 Burris was sent to Neuse for processing. Five days later he was moved to Craven. On August 25th, 2000 he was then moved to Greene where he was released in December 2000.

Burris then was sent to prison again the following year. In March 2002 he was transferred to Caledonia. He was then moved to Hyde in August 2002, Pamlico in September 2003, and Duplin in November 2004 to July 2005. Burris was transferred to other prisons and was released on April 29th of this year.
