University Health Systems is taking over management of another hospital here in Eastern Carolina.
UHS says after seven months of negotiations it will begin to manage Albemarle Hospital in Elizabeth City and its related facilities.
Under the agreement, Albermarle Health will pay UHS $500,000 for management services and UHS will also be eligible for an annual performance bonus.
Albemarle's chief executive officer and chief finance officer will become UHS employees, and UHS will draft annual budget and management plans for Albemarle.
UHS says the agreement does keep what it calls "a high level" of local authority. The current hospital authority board still will approve all decisions regarding the size of its workforce, employee compensation and benefits, and addition or termination of any programs or services.
The pact takes effect May 1st.
UHS operates Bertie Memorial Hospital, Chowan Hospital, Duplin General Hospital, Heritage Hospital, Outer Banks Hospital, Pitt County Memorial Hospital, and Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.
