Authorities say, Saturday at 2:30 a.m., Wilmington Police officers rescued a 20-year-old woman from the Cape Fear River.
They say, Corporal Andrew Korwatch was on patrol along the Riverwalk in the 200 block of S. Water Street when he heard a scream for help coming from the river.
He says, he saw a woman being carried south by the current.
They say, Corporal Korwatch got past locked gates to get to a floating dock where he was able to throw a dock hose to the stranded woman.
Lawmen say, she was able to grab onto the hose and then was pulled to the swim platform on the back of a boat. Corporal Korwatch helped the woman into the boat and then onto the dock. EMS and the Wilmington Fire Department responded.
Saturday’s successful river rescue was less than twenty-four hours after the recovery of the body of a missing Marine on Friday.
Authorities say, the woman who was rescued on Saturday gave false names prior to her true identity being discovered. Lawmen report, she has been identified as 20-year-old Lydian Beck of Wilmington.
Lawmen say Beck informed officers that she just wanted to go for a swim. Beck was charged with Unlawful Swimming at a City Park and Hinder and Delay of a Peace Officer.
