Authorities say a 13-year-old boy died when he fell from the bed of a pickup truck driven on a private road in Brunswick County by a 15-year-old friend.
The StarNews of Wilmington reports that the N.C. Highway Patrol said John Paul Smith Jr., who would have turned 14 on Friday, was pronounced dead at the scene in the town of Supply.
The patrol said the 15-year-old was driving the pickup with three passengers in the cab and two teenagers in the bed Monday when he turned from one dirt road onto another.
According to the patrol, the victim stood up in the truck bed as the driver was turning, lost his balance and fell from the truck and onto the ground.
The patrol said the driver won't be charged.
