Fire officials say there is a likely chance of dense smoke or a super-fog event Wednesday evening into Thursday morning south of the Juniper Road fire potentially impacting I-40, Hwy 17 and other roads in the fire area.

Fire officials say driving in these conditions is extremely dangerous and should be avoided. If you find yourself in these conditions, experts say get as far off the road as possible and remain in your vehicle with your lights and emergency flashers on. Road closures are possible. Officials will monitor conditions continually to assess risks to public safety.

An approximate 8,000 acre burnout operation was conducted Tuesday in the Holly Shelter Game Lands East on the south side of the fire, north and east of New Road. The burnout operation successfully burned the fuels between the fire and New Road, improving the ability of firefighters to contain the fire and protect homes along Hwy 17 when winds shift and come out of the north, northwest.

The fire is approximately 30,593 acres with 68% containment. The fire is burning in the Holly Shelter Game Lands, 8 miles North of Topsail and was reported June 19th after it was started from a lightning strike.
