A hearing is scheduled in Wrightsville Beach on a request by the owners to repair a dilapidated pier that closed more than 15 years ago because of damage from storms.
The StarNews of Wilmington reports that the owners of the Crystal Pier want to repair the structure and has been closed since 1996. Public hearings on conditional-use permit applicaitons are scheduled for Tuesday before the town planning board and Thursday before the board of aldermen.
Town planner Eryn Moller says state regulations require that ocean fishing piers serve a public purpose so the Crystal Pier must reopen to the public after it's rebuilt.
If Wrightsville Beach officials approve the permit, the owners will have to seek permits from the state, and then a building permit from the town.
