The superintendent of a state prison under investigation for ordering inmates to rub hot sauce on their genitals says he will retire.

Lafayette Hall was place on paid leave earlier this month from the top job at Sampson Correctional Institution. A Department of Public Safety spokeswoman says Hall intends to retire.

Six inmates allege correctional officers forced them to perform numerous humiliating acts, including gulping hot sauce and slathering it on themselves, resulting in painful blisters. The male inmates also reported being forced to simulate sex acts for the entertainment of guards, as well as to capture and kiss wild snakes while working on a road crew.

The state says lead officer Anthony Jackson has resigned, while officer David Jones remains under investigation.

Hall had been in charge of the prison outside of Clinton since 2000 and started with the Department of Correction in 1978.
