Perdue: NC Should Be 1st East Coast State For Offshore Wind Farms

The U.S. Department of Energy says it intends to spend $50 million to speed the development of offshore wind farms, with a goal of issuing leases off four Atlantic coast states by the end of the year. Governor Perdue wants North Carolina in that mix.

Right now the Interior Department has only identified sites along the coasts of Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and New Jersey for potential wind farms. Perdue says she wants North Carolina to be the first state on the east coast using offshore windmills to generate energy. She says the state has first-class wind resources and the largest offshore wind on the east coast and that developing just some of these resources could be an economic boon to the state in the years ahead.
