Pate Sworn In, Pays For Ice Cream

The NC Senate candidate whose line, "I paid for this ice cream," became a memorable TV commercial, thanked supporters during his swearing in ceremony by buying them the cool treat.

Republican Louis Pate was sworn in Friday as the NC District 5 Senator after beating out incumbent Democrat Don Davis.

The courtroom at the Greene County courthouse was full for the ceremony. Pate mentioned that his competitor called him after they learned the final results. Pate called Davis a "class act."

Towards the end of the ceremony Pate invited everyone to a reception where his grandchildren served ice cream--and of course Pate paid for that ice cream!

Anonymous on Jan 8, 2011 at 07:03 PM, it is comments such as yours that divide both parties. First, Neo didn't name call anyone, so nice try there, secondly, he stated facts, you stated hooey rhetoric of "can't we all just get along". Well, no we cannot as we are not socialists, we are a republic. You guys lost big on Nov 2nd and all of us know how sore losers you are. Well, it ain't over brother, as 2012 will be here soon. We are fed up with bleeding heart liberals nad progressives trying to destroy America, yes, destroy this country. Well, some of us will go fighting and kicking....I hope you get it!

"Anonymous" of Jan 8 at 7:03PM, I get tired of do-gooders and feel-gooders telling me I should roll over and go along with those who wish to change the republic that our founders established into a socialist state...in order for us all to get along. When I say the socialists are attempting to fundamentally change the country, I am not using inflamatory rhetoric, I am stating the truth. There are people in elected office who want the government to control healthcare, drive energy prices sky high to curb use and force us onto green energy which is currently unavailable because the technology doesn't exist to provide all we need. They want to tax at higher rates so they can give entitlements to those who are too lazy to work but who know how to work their way into a handout with ease. Socialists are not a figment of the imagination, they are at least 30% of the American population. They like to be called progressives, yet they meet the definition of the term socialist, so....

Well, here we go again redacting what has already been said on these blogs and proven with the outcome of the 2010 elections. Steve, get real Davis was only at the Relay for Life in 2008 and 2010 election years. He serves self and infact if you live in Greene County you would know from last week's Standard Laconic the exact products of Don Davis' service to the people. The Town of Snow Hill is still digging out from under his overspending, hidden reprimands from state agencies, and trying to piece together the puzzles of redirected funds and merged accounts. As far as what he has done for Greene County - please site those examples. Finally, Davis was called upon repeatedly to come forth and offer explanations to so many questions of town issues and finances but he is yet to do so. Thus, I say Greene County, and all of Senate District 5, is in far better hands with Pate than ever with Davis. Hopefully, Davis will learn from his mistakes, but with his incumbent silence I doubt it!

That was one of the cutest commercials I have ever seen. Loved it and I don't have much nice to say about anything. Thanks.

Neo and Melissa - I get tired of both conservatives and liberals calling the other unpatriotic, sickening, or whatever. Both parties are full of patriotic people who want what's best for our country. Their philosophies concerning what is best can at times be quite different and mostly are at odds with the other party, but the people on both sides are good people and good Americans. Please stop the name calling and labeling and try to be respectful of other people. Comments such as yours, Neo, are what turn people off to any political discussion because those are childish and do nothing to improve things or advance any cause. They only cause further division among people.

'Lonnie" , what is racist is the gov. continuing to pay a certain race, actually (2) certain races to continue to have children they do not give a flip about and only have them for a check. Why is our gov. in a trillion dollar defecit ? Well I am not rocket scientist but I believe it starts with this FACT !

I live in Snow Hill and have so all my life...as for those who bash former Senator Davis I have seen good things from him. While i have disagreed with some of his political views from time to time, Mr. Davis had been a very respected person in this community for many years. He always wears a smile on his face and volunteers his time at MANY community events throughout the year. Whether at relay for life events or on the little league tee-ball field Mr Davis has always been and will continue to be a great asset to Greene County and the surrounding communities.

Senator Pate is a gentleman and demonstrated it by recognizing Davis as the story clearly points out. Davis lost and the majority of votes ruled. Frankly, Davis is so arrogant that he is still driving around with Senate plates on all three of his cars even though the plates expired on December 31, 2010 and he is now under the 15 day grace period for license tag renewal. If Davis had any character he would already have removed those plates out of respect for the 2011 -2012 General Assembly, the voters of Senate District 5 and Mr. Pate, who has certainly showed more respect than Davis. For those of you who still think Davis is so great - well go get so ice cream and get over it! He was defeated and his defeat was caused by his on selfish, self-serving actions - actions of which he is still denying to answer questions over. Democracy was the champion on November 2 and the people's voice was clearly spoken and the results were heard!

"Lonnie", do you mind pointing out what was racist about his campaign? You know, other than vowing to protect the rights of ALL citizens instead of just looking out for one minority racial group.
