Progress Energy says an employee was killed this morning in an explosion at its Sutton Steam Electric Plant near Wilmington.

They have identified the victim as Cory Rogers, a 24-year-old technician.

The company says the blast happened during routine maintenance at the coal-fired plant just before 9:00 a.m. Progress says there was no fire and no danger to the public.

The 600-megawatt plants has three units, built in 1954, 1955 and 1972. Progress has already announced plans to replace those units with a new plant to open in 2014.
