Perdue Says State Will Be Ready If Gulf Oil Arrives

Gov. Beverly Perdue has told a group of legislative leaders there is only a slim chance that oil from the Gulf of Mexico will reach North Carolina shores.

But Perdue says the state will be ready if it happens. The emergency management division is to provide Perdue with an updated response plan by June 21.

A computer model by the National Center for Atmospheric Research shows that oil leaking from the well could enter the Gulf's loop current and the Gulf Stream and reach North Carolina shores.

Researchers say oil could threaten East Coast beaches by early next month, but they caution the models are not a forecast.

I am glad that Gov. Perdue has a plan for our NC coast in cleaning up the oil from the Gulf. Lets hope that she will share this plan with BP and our President for cleaning the Gulf.

Derek, if you are from Lousianna, hopefully your president will not wait 6 weeks to deploy all the skimmer ships it needed, or playing gold, vacationing, during a crisis. Oh, he does that a lot...

And exactly what are they going to do when it does arrive. Slim chance, that is what they said about an oil spill from an oil rig, that is what they said about it getting into the marshes, slim chance. This is hurricane season. Want to hear exactly what they are going to do, including if it is with a hurricane coming a shore.

Her plan is to stand on the shoreand greet the oil with open, loving arms......What a joke of a statement. A common sense statement would have been something to the effect of " Although we hope the Oil does not reach our coast, we are currently looking into the best ways to respond to it if it does. The level of response will certainly depend on the amount of oil that washes ashore, and/or impacts our ocean resources........" oh well, and I'm not even smarter than a 5th grader.

Jim, if you are from South Carolina, hopefully our governor won't decide to hike the Appalachian Trail during a time of crisis....
