NC Rehabilitation Center Releases 16 Sea Turtles

Volunteers have released 16 turtles rehabilitated at a North Carolina rescue center.

The StarNews of Wilmington reported that volunteers from the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center released the turtles Wednesday at Topsail Island. Many of the turtles had been injured by pollution or boat propellers.

The turtles were loaded into trucks and sport utility vehicles, and driven to the beach, where dozens of spectators lined up to watch the turtles go into the water. It took nine people to carry Bogue, the largest turtle, weighing over 200 pounds.

Center executive director Jean Beasley says the center has 39 turtles, an all-time high.
