New Hanover ABC Board Members Stepping Down

ABC board members in a coastal North Carolina county are stepping down following a flap over the salaries of the board's father-and-son administrative leaders.

Multiple media outlets reported all three members of the New Hanover County ABC board sent resignation letters Monday to the county commissioners.

The resignations of Chairman Charles Wells, Richard Hanson and Stephen Culbreth were announced on the same day the commissioners scheduled a public hearing with Alcoholic Beverage Control board members. The ABC members were expected to take questions about the pay of administrator Billy Williams and his son, assistant administrator Bradley Williams. The hearing was canceled.

Billy Williams earns $232,000 annually, while Bradley Williams gets a salary of $115,500.

The letter said there were "misunderstandings emerging" within the public about their performance as board members.

Anyone working for the taxpayers should be audited with regard to their compensation and performance. We could save a lot of money if we quit paying someone 25-100 bucks a hour when we could get someone to do the exact same job for less than half that. Reminds me of riding by a road construction crew, and seeing 1 person with the shovel digging, and 10 standing around in white shirts watching.

Just who in the HELL is worth $230,000 per year. Based on 40 hours per week that's $110.00 per hour.

Wow, with salaries like that, it's no wonder the ABC has a problem making a profit. Is this just for the one county ? Totally ridiculous , must be our tax dollars at work.

I don't think they should lose the jobs but the salary seems ridiculous for their position. Still a little of that "good ole' boy" network out there hanging on but quickly corroding.

According to the stories I have read, they people in question did their jobs and did them well. It is such a shame people must lose their jobs because of politics and the unfair practices of the media.
