Woman Accused Of Hiding Mother's Death For Months

The New Hanover County Sheriff's Office said in a statement late Wednesday that 47-year-old Amy Blanche Stewart was charged with concealment of death, which is considered a low-level felony in the state.

Stewart was charged one day after police said a 911 caller reported that 87-year-old Blanche Matilda Roth was unconscious and not breathing. Police found Roth's body in her bed and say she likely died in May.

Stewart posted a $1,000 secured bond and was released from jail.

Authorities didn't know if Stewart had an attorney. She faces her first court appearance Thursday morning.

The Wilmington paper reports that the daughter, her husband, and 3 children ages 15,17, & 23 lived in the 3 bedroom house with the body. The 911 caller reported she had been dead about a month. All those living in the house should be charged. Even a 15 year old knows when somebody is dead!

Did she really believe the paramedics would think her mother had just recently died?

In this case it would have to be the money, or the lack of care for the woman. Maybe they just starved her shut the door and never came back?? Who knows, this just gives me the creeps.

I agree that a $1,000 bond was not enough. That's how people get away. I guess the magistrate doesn't have compassion for old folks! The magistrate must have more important crimes!

I wonder how many dead people are being kept in a locked chest freezer in various locations in the U.S with the checks rolling in each month?

THE MAGISTRATE THAT GIVE HER A BOND OF A THOUSAND DOLLARS IS A IDIOT. A HUNDRED THOUSAND MAYBE WOULD HAVE BEEN MORE APPROPIATE OR NO BOND AT ALL.

Barbara, the news reporters were not the ones saying "she was not breathing". That is what 911 is reporting. The news reporters are only reporting what they have been told by the 911 Call Center, or perhaps, they might have even listened to the tapes. Being that this story occurred in New Hanover County, I seriously doubt that Channel 7 went to Wilmington to cover this story, as Wilmington has their own television station. This story was most probably picked up on the NEWS WIRE, as it was also told on WRAL, Channel 5.
