NC Ports, Chairman Receive Federal Subpoenas

The North Carolina State Ports Authority and its chairman have been subpoenaed by federal investigators already interested in the activities of former Gov. Mike Easley and his wife.

Authority spokeswoman Karen Fox said Wednesday that the authority and Chairman Carl Stewart of Gastonia have been issued subpoenas by the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Fox said the authority had collected documents sought in the subpoena but declined to specify them. She wouldn't confirm a report by The News & Observer of Raleigh that federal authorities wanted information about a state-owned marina in the Easleys' hometown of Southport.

Former North Carolina State University chancellor James Oblinger testified Wednesday morning before a grand jury that is seeking details about a job given to former first lady Mary Easley.
