A young man who was surfing off the coast of an Eastern Carolina beach has died.
According to Surf City police Kurt Murray passed away at the New Hanover Regional Cape Fear Medical Center Sunday afternoon.
A news release says police got a call about a person in the water with a possible neck injury around 2 p.m. Sunday.
Crews tried to revive the 21-year-old Hamstead man at the scene before he was taken to the hospital where he later died.
Witnesses told police they saw Murray fall off his surfboard and never surface. Other surfers managed to pull the man from the water and bring him to shore.
