Fatal Wreck Near Onslow-Pender County Line Involving Inmate Van & Truck

Authorities have identified the person killed after a county inmate van and a pickup truck collided, catching fire.

Emergency crews were called to the crash around 4:30 p.m. on Highway 53 at the intersection of Highway 50, that's between Jacksonville and Burgaw.

The accident happened near the Onslow-Pender County line, in Maple Hill.

It involved a Pender County inmate transport van and several other vehicles. There were four inmates in the van, along with two officers.

State troopers say the inmate van was headed west on Highway 53 and it collided with a pickup truck that was heading south on Highway 50.

Troopers say the driver of the truck pulled out in front of the van and ws killed. She's identified as 67-year-old Lonnie McGhee from Turkey, NC.

The Highway Patrol says the crash impact sent the truck into two parked cars at the convenience store. The pickup truck caught fire and McGhee was killed. Luckily no one was in the two parked cars.

Traffic on Highway 50 has a stop sign at the intersection. Authorities are still investigating the crash.

Lonnie will surely be missed. Lonnie moved from here to Turkey. She would come to our church on Sunday before going to work, because we have 7:30 AM service. I was in Turkey about a month ago, she invited me back to spend a week with her. MY LOVE, PRAYERS AND SYMPATHY TO THE FAMILY.

THER LORD KNOWS BEST.....!!!! It is with a heavy heart that I express my deepest sympathies to my entire McGhee family. Words cannot begin to express the pain and grief we ALL are feeling right now. Our beloved aunt, sister-in law, cousin, friend, MOTHER, and WIFE has gone to be with HER SAVIOR.... Let us honor her life and cherish her legacy for as long as we shall live. WE LOVED MRS. LONNIE MAE MCGHEE but the LORD loved her best!!!!!!! I pray that the LORD gives us all strength during this dark period especially her husband, her children. Please know that GOD is too WISE to make a mistake. We will take JOY in knowing that WE will see her again!!!!!

My Aunt loved fishing, and she had invited me to come down to NC this month to go fishing with her! I was looking forward to that fishing trip, and just spending time with her, may she rest in peace. I will surely miss her with all of my heart!!!

THE FINAL FISHING TRIP, THE BEGINNING TO ETERNITY Fishing at Topsail Island on the Seaview Fishing Pier will never be the same. She knew the fish were biting and she had to get in on the action; she was headed that way. But GOD knew best! This is tragic, but she was doing what she loved to do.GO FISHING.She was my friend and family that always kept people smiling. She never met a stranger. This is truly a sad time for the Duplin and Sampson Co. in the NC area. R.I.P. "LONNIE MAE". I have traveled the same road many of times going fishing myself and that is a bad intersection. It really needs a stoplight, caution light or something other than a small stop sign in the corner asap!!! To everyone on the way to Topsail Island this fishing season,be careful and May GOD be with you all. Please Pray for the Mcghee Family.......To have the strength to get through this difficult time. She's "GONE" but "NOT FORGOTTEN". I can imagine she'd said "I JUST HAD TO GO FISHING, THAT'S ALL"
