Woman Charged With Trying To Smuggle Pot, Other Contraband Into State Prison

An Asheboro woman is accused of trying to smuggle drugs and other contraband into a maximum security prison here in Eastern Carolina.

Greene County Sheriff Lemmie Smith says Pamela Starling has been charged with possession of a controlled substance on prison premises, and possession with intent to sell/deliver marijuana.

Smith says they received a call Tuesday afternoon from the Maury Correctional Institution that they saw a woman put a large bag into a trash can at the front gate house. Prison officials found marijuana, cell phones, rolling papers, and a large bag of loose tobacco.

When deputies arrived at the prison the woman was still there.

The 39-year-old Starling has since been released on a $15,000 bond.
