The U.S. Geological Survey says a minor earthquake happened this morning, south of Kinston.
The U.S.G.S. says a 2.1 magnitude quake was detected shortly after 7:00 a.m. on Sandy Foundation Road, that's just south of Woodington Middle School.
A resident told WITN that she heard an explosion and that her house and the neighborhood shook.
Lenoir County says there were no reports of injuries or damage and that most people who felt it where south of Kinston.
The U.S.G.S. says the quake happened about three miles below the earth's surface.
More than a million earthquakes happened in the world each year.
The last reported earthquake in Eastern Carolina was a 3.8 magnitude quake in Pamlico County back in 1994.
