Farmers and landowners in Lenoir County county are going green.
Strata Solar and Lenoir County officials cut the ribbon Tuesday on two new solar farms outside of Kinston. Each of the 35 acre sites are home to 26,000 solar panels and produce up to 6 megawatts of electricity. That's enough clean energy to power 750 local homes per site.
Eric Rouse, a Lenoir County Commissioner who also owns the land that one of the sites was built on, says clean energy isn't the only benefit solar farming brings to the county. He says, "They typically pay 4 to 7 times what you could generate off of leasing to a farmer so, and it's a huge benefit also for the community because it increases the tax base."
Strata Solar, the company that runs the sites, says they have plans for more solar farms all across the east.
