Plans for a bypass around Kinston is causing mixed feelings for residents
The North Carolina Department of Transportation has been working for nearly two decades to construct a 4-lane highway off of US 70 to bypass Kinston. It held a public meeting Tuesday night to explain the project. The purpose is to improve traffic flow, but residents say they're skeptical of the effects the project could have.
"I'm not sure about the need for it. Maybe not a project this scale, maybe something a little less ambitious," said Lenoir County resident Jim Gaddis.
DOT says it's unclear when the project will break ground. There's another year of studies to conduct, and the estimated $200 million project has no funding right now.
The DOT will host another workshop Thursday from 4-7pm at the Kinston High School cafeteria.
