Players Brave Tough Conditions At Cutter Creek

Snow Hill, N.C. -- While The Masters is still a week away, the first round scores in the NGA Pro Golf Tour’s Cutter Creek Golf Classic presented by Bojangles resembled that of a PGA Tour “Major” with only 15 players that completed the first round breaking par on the 7,280-yard layout on Wednesday.

Canadian Riley Wheeldon and Chas Narramore of Kingston, Tenn., held the clubhouse lead at 4-under par when play was suspended due to darkness with a few groups still on the course.

Wheeldon of Comox did most of his damage on the front side, carding four birdies and posting a 32. Battling high winds and quick greens, the University of Louisville golfer ran into a little trouble on the backside, but a birdie on No. 18 pulled Riley back into a tie for the lead at 4-under par.

Narramore, a former Middle Tennessee standout, matched Riley with an outward 32 and posted just one bogey in the tough conditions. However, after a blemish on the 10th hole, Narramore played the final eight holes 1-under par to join Riley atop the leaderboard in the $150,00 event.

Randall Hutchison of Traverse City, Mich., and Gyles Robin of Jersey, England, posted 3-under 69s in the opening round to finish the day tied for third. Hutchison, the 2011-12 Bridgestone Winter Series money leader, had three birdies and no bogeys, while Robin carded four birdies, three bogeys and one eagle in the first round.

Kyle Ellis (Senatobia, Miss.), Jonathan Hodge (Strawberry Plains, Tenn.) and Jack Newman (Des Moines, Iowa) all carded 2-under 70s on Wednesday to finish in a tie for fifth.

Daniel McCarthy (Syracuse, N.Y.), T.J. Bordeaux (Tacoma, Wash.), Danny Ellis (Heathrow, Fla.), Eric Atsma (Caledonia, Mich.), David Holmes (Knoxville, Tenn.), David Skinns (Lincoln, England), Chris Cannon (Brighton, England) and David McAndrew (Barrington, R.I.) shot 1-under 71s in the opening round and were T8 at the conclusion of play.

Hudson Johnson (Longview, Texas), Kyle McCarthy (Denver, Colo.), Andrew Ruthkoski (Muskegon, Mich.), Joseph Ida (Fort Scott, Kan.), Judson Essequibo (Lake Worth, Fla.), Chase Carroll (Knoxville, Tenn.), Rick Cochran III (Paducah, Ky.) and Matt Fast (Hattiesburg, Miss.) finished the day T16 after shooting even-par 72s in the first round of the four-round event.

The players that failed to finish the first round will restart at 8 a.m., while the second round will start as scheduled. As always, admission is free to the public.
