Lenoir County Superintendent Concerned About Funding Cuts

The superintendent of the Lenoir County School District says he's concerned about the effects federal and state budget cuts will have on the school district.

Superintendent Dr. Steve Mazingo says they're now looking at a 1.5 million dollar shortfall with the loss of 20 teachers if Governor McCrory's budget passes.

On the federal level, he says it's cuts to Title One schools like Sampson alternative school that will be the double whammy. Dr. Mazingo says, "I would certainly like to see more flexibility to where those cuts come from on the Education Department on the national level. I think the decision Title One fund and funds for exceptional children is not the best decision that could be made."

First District Democrat Congressman G.K. Butterfield visited Sampson School Monday where he said the cuts for that school on the federal level are the result of sequestration.
