Lenoir County Inmates Charged With Trying To Smuggle Drugs & Cigarettes


Five Lenoir County inmates are charged with trying to smuggle drugs and cigarettes into the jail.

The Lenoir County Sheriff's Office says marijuana and cigarettes were smuggled into the detention center inside a prescription lotion bottle prescribed to an inmate.

Five inmates were charged, and one woman outside the jail, Jaleisa Gooding, was charged with bringing the contraband to the jail.

The inmates charged are Willie Smith, Deshaun Yates, Darrell Koonce and Tahj Simmons.

Sheriff Chris Hill says he considering purchasing a full body scanner to catch items like this before they enter the jail.

The sheriff says he would use seized drug money to pay for the scanner.
