Lenoir County Chase Suspect Crashes Into Deputy Patrol Car

A Kinston man is expected to appear in court today after lawmen say he led them on a chase that ended in a crash with a deputy cruiser Sunday.

Clayton Moore of Kinston was arrested following a vehicle chase that started Sunday evening around 8:15 in the area of NC Highway 11 and 55. Chief Deputy Chris Hill says that Moore was being chased because he was a suspected of stealing a Toyota Corolla earlier in the day, and being involved in a purse theft as well.

Officials say stop sticks were used on NC 55 near Sandy Bottom, where they were able to deflate the tires of Moore’s Dodge Stratus. Moore continued to drive down North Croom Bland Road, about 1 mile from NC 55, when he would eventually strike a deputy’s vehicle, ending the chase according to Hill.

Moore refused to get out of the vehicle and was removed when officials say he was found to be intoxicated. We’re told the license tag of the Corolla stolen earlier in the day was found in Moore’s car.

Moore is being charged with DWI, larceny of the pocketbook, felony larceny of the Toyota Corolla, felony eluding, and multiple traffic violations. Moore’s vehicle was seized under the “run and you’re done” eluding law.

No bond information or other information is available at this time; he's due in court Monday.

The NC State Highway Patrol assisted in the chase.
