Jury Finds Amanda Hayes Guilty Of Killing Kinston Mom

After three days of deliberations, a jury in Wake County has found a Raleigh woman guilty of 2nd degree murder for the death of a Kinston mother.

Both Amanda Hayes and her husband Grant were accused of killing Laura Ackerson in 2011 and then cut up the body with a power saw. The woman's remains were found in a creek near the home of Amanda Hayes' sister in Richmond Texas.

Another Wake County jury convicted Grant Hayes last year and he is serving a life sentence.

Prior to sentencing, Amanda Hayes made a brief statement to the judge, apologizing to Ackerson and her family, as well as to her own family.

"I would just like to apologize with my whole heart, being and soul, first to Laura," said Hayes. "I apologize to her, to her family, to her children, to my family, to Grant's family, to everyone who had to work this case, to everyone who had to sit through this trial, to everyone who is in the media who has had to watch and at least touched their lives. I am so, so sorry that this touched my life in any shape, form or fashion or anyone that I love or care about or anyone. And I am truly, truly sorry with every ounce of my soul."

Judge Donald Stephens sentenced the woman to serve at least 13 years in state prison, giving her credit for time already spent in jail. "It is quite possible that Amanda Hayes could have saved the life of Laura Ackerson, and chose not to," said the judge.

During closing arguments on Monday, the woman's attorneys maintained that Hayes didn't know her husband had killed the mother of his two children until they got to Texas.

Grant Hayes and Ackerson had been involved in a bitter child custody case involving their two children.

Jurors have been deliberating the woman's fate since late Monday afternoon.
