The former head of the Lenoir County Republican Party has been charged with insurance fraud.
The State Department of Insurance has charged Harry Edwards III of Kinston with two counts of obtaining property by false pretenses. Edwards withdrew as a Republican candidate for Lenoir County commissioner earlier this year and was a member of the county planning board.
Investigators say in June 2008, Edwards submitted fake life insurance applications to The Chesapeake Life Insurance Company and Transamerica Life Insurance Company. They say the 32-year-old man received advance commission in excess of $16,000.
The state says Edwards has since voluntarily surrendered his insurance license and is scheduled to appear before a judge on Tuesday.
